They do have that format of theirs which is a drm wrapper around PDF, so maybe we'll get a better PDF device eventually but for now it doesn't seem like a priority. At any rate, the existing DX is a dead end pretty much.
Mind you, I would love to have a dx myself, but it's too expensive. Prices on eBay have not budged.

bingo. it's all about profits. if i'm typical of DX owners, i get allot of my books and material for free in pdf format. in fact most of my library is sideloaded. amazon don't like me because i generate minimal revenue for them from ebook sales….their whole business model is mass appeal and mass sales.
the whole idea behind DX was for amazon to get a foothold in the academic text book market and make bucket loads selling technical books and manuals. unfortunately the students gave the device a big thumbs down.
in many ways amazon has let down its customers by failing to support the device…it's almost like they've taken the metaphorical huff with DX owners and have now left them and their expensive devices out in the cold.
