Growl is a global notification system. It gives nice little popup messages.
Calibre uses Qt for sending notifications, Growl receives them and displays them. There is an incompatibility between Qt and the Growl 1.3. There is nothing we can do about this but wait for either Qt to be updated to support Growl 1.3 or the Growl people to put out a new version that doesn't cause Qt apps to crash with 1.3.
For the time being go to preferences, Look and Feel, check Disable notifications.
