Wow. Just goes to show you never can tell what entirely innocuous thread is going to tip into OMG Internet Dramaz!!!

But getting back to the original question: if you don't yet own an e-book reader of any sort, you'll probably be wanting detailed directions. So...if you want to put a book from Project Gutenberg (or from this site or from any other non-Amazon place on the Internet) onto your Kindle, you will need to:

1) Download the version of the file most appropriate for your device (usually that will be .mobi, .prc, or .azw, though many other file formats are more or less readable as well).

2) Consult the video on this Kindle support page to see how to transfer the file. (You can skip the first 1:35 or so of the video, as that part is mostly concerned with manually transferring purchased Amazon content.)
