This is what happened to me in New York. When I left my K3 on the train (intercity Amtrak), I immediately contacted the station lost and found. I also logged in to my account and changed the Kindle's name to my email address and sent a document giving information on how to contact me or how to return it to Amazon. I left the account registered until I saw that the document had been delivered, then deregistered the account and asked Amazon to blacklist it. (No coupon was offered and I clearly stated I wanted it back). There was no way anyone who found it could have mistakenly assumed it was free for the taking.
Never heard anything from Amazon or the Train station. After two months, I bought a new K3, but am still irked that some dishonest person didn't do the right thing.
