Tom Jones (full title
The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling), written by Henry Fielding and originally published in 1749, is a ground-breaking English novel. Henry Fielding and Samuel Richardson were the two great English novelists of the mid 18th century, and it's interesting to compare "Tom Jones" with Richardson's "Pamela". The two are strikingly different, with Richardson (a self-educated man of relatively humble origins) telling a straightforward tale, while the highly-educated Fielding's work is full of classical allusions and much more "sweeping" in its scope.
Tom Jones is born as a foundling on the wealthy Squire Allworthy's estate in Somerset. The novel tells his life and adventures, and the ultimate discovery of who he really is.
A truly epic work which everyone should read; one of the "great" English novels.
