With regards to ereaders their reputation (unlike other manufacturers) is to deliver a bug free device that doesn't require updating. When an actual bug is found they have corrected it.

This may be a possibility, but as long as the ereader doesn't need a bug fix I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for updates. I imagine independent developers will present all of the alternative functions anyone could want in a variety of packages. Seeing what these developers come up with will be great fun.
