It probably is just a loose term. I saw your machine being described as a Ultra Portable with a 12.1 inch screen.

But over on the Dell site, they had a heading:
Dell Laptops and Notebooks

and under that heading was two Alienware machines with 11.6 inch screens.

There is another factor as well and that is the Aspect ratio. With the new 16:10, 16:9 ratios instead of a 4:3 ratio a 12.1 screen today will have a different total width than the old ones.

e.g. a 19" 4:3 has a vertical height of a 24" to 26" 16:9 TV.

I like the old 4:3 ratios because it proportions a book better. To get the same vertical height today, you have to get a bigger screen.
