I have all my vinyl stored as 24bit/96k wav files (via a M-Audio Delta), they sound just as good as the originals. I also downsampled them to 16bit/44k to make some CDs for portable use, they don't sound much worse. I think most of the problem with commercial CDs is the dynamic compression they use. If you look at the shape of a wav taken from a CD it's almost square, with very little variation in frequency. But if you look at a wav from a vinyl record it's up and down all over the place.
