B&N lists...... 2,520,035
But the breakdown doesn't add up. For example, Amazon lists 322,098 fiction and 711,492 nonfiction. That nonfiction number includes 222,657 history. It's hard to believe there were that many history titles published. Yet history only breaks down to about 60,000 titles where did the other 162,000 go? And some free public domain titles did appear in that 1 million total number.
B&N lists 183,704 fiction and only 67,070 nonfiction. There are many more nonfiction titles if you add each individual subcategory. Obviously, when we break it all down into genres we won't hit 2 million titles. There are more available to search than that are categorized. This applies to Amazon also.
And neither let you separate out the public domain. So I couldn't determine how both companies determined their total numbers. But neither company is forth coming in listing their free and public domain titles.

Doug Pardee had an interesting post on B&N's numbers
here. He shows this year's numbers vs. last years.
