Yes, I think the iPad would have sold a LOT fewer if it had come out only in 7". At 7" you don't have a new device, you have a large phone. There isn't enough extra room to develop the kind of innovative apps that make having an iPad such a wonderful experience.

If a tablet was ONLY for reading books, then 7" makes sense. Book reading is but one thing the iPad is good for.

I do think Apple should release a 6 or 7" iPod Touch XL. iPhone/iPod apps run on a larger screen. But it would not be an iPad.
