Error in setup - Wait you are using two different accounts

My son bought a brand new kobo touch today - with pocket money he has been saving up for months. I already have one and have used it for months successfully, and have factory reset numerous times so I do claim some level of knowledge (in other words - I'm not completely thick!)

When he connected it to the PC (as instructed), the latest version of the kobo desktop told him:

"Wait, you are using 2 different accounts. Kobo desktop signed in as email address1, kobo ereader logged in as email address1".

But there is only one account and email address1 was the same anyway - ie the message quoted the same email address twice - ie one account.

It gave him the option to overwrite the reader - which was brand new anyway so he selected this. But it still didn't work and got stuck in a loop. Nothing either of us did could get it sync'ing. We ejected and tried connecting to wifi - another error, couldn't get it to connect. It would connect for a second or so then simply drop out. So no way to sync wirelessly.

We factory reset twice, uninstalled and reinstalled the desktop, signed in and out - no luck. It is fine however with ADE.

I phoned kobo and their only suggestion was to return the device. Very disappointing, at age 11 when you save up your pocket money it's a tough blow when you get a dud!

Anyone got any advice before we give up and take it back?

Thanks
