A always liked their explanation. Short story: when in doubt, just ask yourself "can I replace it by 'it is' ?" If yes, then it's "it's", otherwise it's "its".

True! But there would be far fewer mistakes if it were the other way around. Why "they" chose to treat nouns and pronouns differently is this regard has always been a mystery to me.
