And I don't see how the Kindle or Nook stores are relevant for someone who simply doesn't use them. What is relevant however, is the devices ability to read e-books in various formats regardless of how those e-books were obtained. Not everyone reads e-books in English, and there are other websites to get them other than Amazon or B&N.
Yes there are and you should choose your ebook reader accordingly.
