The screen is plastic, too. This is true for both the T1 and the 650.

There's a wide variation between individual eInk screens. Some people have said that the new Kindle has better contrast than the older K3; others have said that they see no difference. There's really no reason that there should be a difference - they're using the same screen. I suspect it's no more than a variation between individual screens.
