Besides the pain, folks just can't appreciate the FEAR of seeing a stranger approaching your most delicate gear with a sharp, pointy thing, and you just have the stand there and NOT kick him in the head! (I'm talking about the anesthesia syringe, to say nothing about a real knife!)
But the pain!

Walking was bad, but that awful jolt that would rip through your whole body every time you stepped down from a curb when crossing a street...
OUCH!!! It's been 35 years but I still remember the pain....
