It works on my new Kindle. I deleted a personal document from my Kindle it immediately went to Archived items. I then went into the archive and re-downloaded it. This was a free ebook that I tested.

Forgot to mention the first time I did it I also received an email from Amazon telling me that the personal document I sent was now available on my amazon account to download anytime. They basically introduce the feature to you once you email yourself a document.
