OP: I assume from this that the "full text" is in RTF format. Given this, I would follow a KISS workflow, as suggested earlier, and not introduce any additional, unneaded programs into the mix. Try importing the RTF directly into calibre, converting to ePub, and editing the ePub with Sigil directly from the calibre library (easy access via the "Open containing folder" button on the toolbar).

If you are on Windows, you might try opening the RTF in Wordpad (NOT Word) and resaving to a new file and importing that new file into calibre. Wordpad with strip a lot of Word-cr&p out of the file. This may remove more formatting than you want so don't alter the original file.
