I installed the beta and run the welcome wizard again selecting Sony generic. Calibre added the device icon to the toolbar but gave "error communicating with the device":
calibre, version 0.8.21

DeviceError: The SONY XML cache "'H:\\\\database\\\\cache\\\\media.xml'" does not exist. Try disconnecting and reconnecting your reader.
I disconnected and reconnected. It found again the device, with the same comm error. I checked with explorer and there is no media.xml in H:\database\cache (location is empty). There is a H:\Sony_Reader\database\cache\books\ with folder 1 for book 1, 2 for book 2, etc. but there is no media.xml that I can see.
