The publishers do not stipulate the kind or difficulty level of DRM. Amazon decided on the mobi format and Amazon decided on the particular type of DRM they use.

Plus, Amazon is making their DRM increasingly difficult to crack. Check out Apprentice Alf’s blog for more information. Most other ebook DRM is easier to crack (not including Apple but I don’t buy ebooks from them, either).

Golden Handcuffs are nothing new to any consumer focused industry. I’m not quite sure why people always act surprised when speaking of golden handcuffs in relation to Amazon.
