Aha! One of the (numerous) gas chappies we got in to quote says that we can be in spec with an alteration to the flue. AND he got the old boiler working again. (Although, of course, he left it off when he left - proper gas fitters can't leave technically out-of-spec appliances running.) But I could turn it back on now it's functioning properly again.

Much happier to not be spending over £2k that I though I was going to have to spend.
