Many thanks for taking the time to reply - this has been really helpful. Perhaps the brotherhood of man does still exist, it is just found more on forums than in some churches.
I would be using it to make notes against verses of scripture, perhaps adding a cross reference or two, or a piece of explanatory text, rather than pencil things into my Bible.
The search function as you say would be essential.
