One dog (sweet soppy black Labrador) currently, but she is my first dog. I have previously always lived with cats - see my avatar Possum who went to the happy hunting ground a few years ago. The dog is my husband's choice (and I love her to bits), but when we stop travelling a couple of times a year I'll get another cat. One that can cope with sharing the house with a Lab. of course.
I think people who are Introverts prefer cats and Extroverts prefer dogs. It's certainly true for my husband and me.
