So I've switched to just mowing the leaves with my mulching mower, leaving the remnants on the lawn, and lightly watering to keep the dust down. I do that a few times each fall. It doesn't look as pretty but I get natural fertilizer for less effort and nothing added to the landfill. I don't know how practical that is for others but I'm never going back.
On the other hand, there are some old guys around (he knows who he is) who don't yet have snow to shovel so they (he) should go out now and start raking.

My neighbor lady has what I call Lawn OCD. In the spring/summer she mows about every three days, and then clears off the clippings with her VERY LOUD leaf blower. We do finally have her "trained" to wait til about noon if at all possible (since we work second shift and our bedroom window is about three inches from her driveway). In the fall, out comes the leaf blower again...
For some reason, all the leaves in the neighborhood avoid our yard though, with the happy result that we NEVER have to rake. Our neighbors on the other side aren't so lucky though. Every weekend from the time the leaves start to fall til it snows, they'll be out raking and bagging....
