Same here. I was a little shocked when I discovered that many people seem to consider The Gunslinger one of the weakest of the series. It's my second favorite (after Wizard and Glass). I'm hard-pressed to think of another opening sentence that sets the tone of an entire novel more perfectly or more succinctly. My least favorites* would be The Wolves of Calla and The Drawing of the Three (I've never been fond of "Meet the Characters" exposition books).

*Note: "least favorites" should not be construed as "just couldn't stand."
