Bingo! Haboob is Arabic for strong wind and refers to those enormous dust storms they can have coming off the desert. They occur elsewhere, too, and Phoenix had three this summer, I believe.
According to the mentioned book, Haboob is somewhere in eastern Sudan or perhaps Eritrea but I am unable to find a modern reference to any such town and Google Maps just shows me a lot of dirt (sand) where it ought to be. Haboob was haboobed one too many times, perhaps.
