I'd recommend James Branch Cabell's It Happened in Florida trilogy. In particular, There were Two Pirates. It's only about 90 pages long, a novella, but it'll give you a good feel for Cabell's style and taste. It's available on Mobileread. For adult tastes, you might try Balzac'x Droll Stories.
