A good way to put my pet crusade in perspective

Not just your crusade. There are enough of us that abhor DRM and embrace the 'Defective By Design' motto of DRM.
If the publishing big boys want to follow in the stumbling, bumbling footsteps of the RIAA and MPAA before them, then I must conclude that they expect the inevitable result: the Napsterization of ebooks. People want to do the right thing (well, maybe most do). If the legal way is also the most painful way, people will find the path of least resistance. Once they get trained that way, they won't bother with the legal way again. I honestly believe that's what happened with music. Instead of embracing digital distribution, big content tried to fight it for so long that people just went "meh' and pirated whatever they wanted since they couldn't get what they wanted legally for a fair price. A decade later, big content finally starts to get it right but it's too late to significantly affect the mindset of the people.
