You make an excellent point.

I have several computers. Literally I have working computers that are just sitting around because "well, they work" and I might need them for something. Sometimes I have the opportunity to give them away, but usually I end up just buying the kids and even a relative or two a new one. That makes them happy, and so I am happy. Also I don't have to worry about the machine failing and that giving me a bad reputation about giving a gift that wasn't any good.

I had a son that passed by on a trip and asked to borrow my big shop vac. He was a little strapped at the time trying to fix up a new place for himself and his wife and was doing some wood work, sanding, painting, etc..
I just gave him the money to get a new one so it wouldn't overload the little car he and his new wife had already overloaded. Also he wouldn't have to return it. "Hey Merry Christmas."

I have only one (1) eReader. The Kindle 3-3G,WiFi. I will never buy a eReader without 3G. I hope Amazon impresses me with a good (limited) 3G tablet, but if it doesn't I will look to Nook. I want a free 3G (limited) system like Kindle has now, even if it is limited on what it can download.
I will even get another Kindle gray scale, if it has a the infrared touch screen and limited 3G. I would actually like it to be a little smaller in width so it would fit in a pocket easier. A built in way to light the screen would be good too. I would design it with a separate replaceable rechargeable battery, say a 3A or even 2A to run the light, but it would be separate from the main battery.

When I go to the woods, or on the lakes or waterways, I will carry a phone and my eReader. I don't risk my notebook in that environment. If I really go "way out of reach" I will have my Spot (Satellite) and my eReader even if 3G doesn't work.

I remember when I was in the service. We would pack paperback books and trade them around. They were actually pretty bulky if you had several and over time would get wet and even moldy. I think the guys must be doing better these days with eReaders.
