It wouldn't be a viable substitute because
fully powering an average home with solar would require 200-300 square feet of paneling, which combined with the battery storage and inverter system will set you back a cool $25,000. Few people go full solar. They solarize water heating, etc, or just supplement main electric service.
Not sure if I'd consider the library a viable substitute, no. But are we talking about having full control over specific titles? Not books in general. So it's like Marvel having a monopoly on Spiderman. Sorry if I misunderstand the issue, here.
