The Carrington Event (super solar flare) in 1859 created a magnetic storm so powerful that telegraph operators received electrical shocks, telegraph paper caught on fire, pylons were throwing sparks and some operators noticed their systems were still able to send and receive messages despite being disconnected from their power supplies.

I'm thinking that today's technology would fare much worse if we had another one of that size and bigger.
