I'm not sure what you mean by dependent on their software. I've only ever needed to use the Kobo Desktop app for firmware updates, and I've had all three versions of the Kobo. The cross-platform Calibre software takes care of the rest.

In regards to the text size on PDFs, unfortunately, that's a limitation of both the design of PDFs and the size of the screen. I can say from experience with a few different 6" e-readers that reading PDFs on any 6" screen is a pain. The Kobo Touch handles PDFs better than most other e-readers, but it's still not great, because e-readers tend not to support reflowing text in PDFs (IIRC, it is possible).
