And I paid over 15$ in tax. But the point is that VAT is based on the final selling price. If something sells for 150 Euros with a VAT rate of 19% (Germany as the example again), then I need to divide 150 by 1.19 (119%) to get the pre-VAT price. From there I can try to whittle down the remaining differences, but it isn't like I can just add 19% to the US pre-tax price to see that VAT should "only" be 19 Euros instead of 24. Those 5 Euros are kinda important when trying to understand the pricing.
