Beside the fact that you can choose not to upgrade, I have serious doubts about "any change can be made to your software or your computer's memory". It's a breach of security.

Since Amazon was the one who sold them the "counterfeit $20 bill", I would say that the people were unlucky and Amazon got off easy.
