I'm a Sony and Kindle owner, been doing EPUB at libraries for a while. I didn't notice any increase in copy count when the Kindle versions arrived. I think what you are seeing is the library buys more copies when holds on a book get over a certain number. I'm not sure how that works, but it definately happens.
