Hello,

Yes you can convert .doc files with Mobipocket reader.

Concerning reading PDF, I use my cybook daily to read technical documents (A4 with a few pictures/diagrams) and I am very happy with it. You just have to select Lanscape mode and Fit Width; each page will be devided into 3 parts that you can scroll.
