Public libraries are usually funded by the local county (Kommunen). Privatly funded a libraries isn't the rule but is sometimes done by book loving locals :-) , often when the government funded library has had to shut down. Unfortunately there was a wave of closed libraries during the crisis of the 90's and times haven't been good since. Mobile library routes are often used as a way to try to cover such areas but unfortunately it's often not enough. Also donations don't really play a part in our budget since we don't have tax cuts for donations they way they do in the US.

Sweden is also divided in larger regions called Län and the Länlibrarians work from the regional centers helping the smaller regional libraries with everything from Interlibrary loan to various literary projects.
