Some pdf's are more readable than others, it depends on the font size. Turn on landscape mode and choose fit width to make the text as large as possible. Even then, in all the ones I've looked at the text is still pretty small, some are unreadable. You only see a portion of a page at a time too.
It's extremely easy to open the mobipocket reader and drag and drop your pdf into it and let it convert automatically. You'll lose some of the formatting.
