I think of "male" stories as featuring a strong protagonist who bucks convention and authority to take charge and solve a situation, while "female" stories feature an insecure, uncertain protagonist who learns to be strong and independent.

This is a gross oversimplification, of course, with lots of exceptions I'm sure, but that's the first thing that comes to my mind.
