I'm certainly not arguing that cruddy teachers should be able to keep their jobs, but what I am arguing is that we shouldn't be condemning the teaching profession as a whole. In much the same way that I don't panic that my toddler will one day be kidnapped every time I see an Amber alert, I don't spend my time worried about her ending up with a lousy teacher. Sure, I've had my fair share of the bad, but I've also had some truly amazing ones.
Now, regarding the union protecting the lousy teacher:
I have a union representative at my job. If I should ever be accused of wrong doing, I would expect my union representative to fight tooth and nail on my behalf. I would hope/presume that I was innocent of whatever the charges are, but regardless of such details, until an investigation has been completed, it is the responsibility and duty of the union to fight for my behalf.
