content server - port forwarding & security

My son has set up the calibre content server so it is accessible from outside our house. He tells me he used port forwarding on the router to do this. I can now access my books via the web from anywhere.

It's a fantastic feature but I have told him I have concerns over the security of our network now. He is only 11 so I'm not sure that he knows enough to be able to reassure me.

He has set up a password on the server, but is there anything else we (or rather he) can do to make it even more secure. And has anyone had an "attack" or similar because of port forwarding?

Thanks
