The fish kill has been in a fresh tank. I'd think not enough time for ammonia to develop. That's a by-product of decomposition. Nothing in the tank yet to decompose.

THIS is a very good possibility. But it really must have been a fast action disease... Right now I have four fancy guppies and one small catfish still swimming. The guppies are in full color and swimming normally. Before dying the other fish lost color and lost control of swim bladders.
