Originally the iPods only supported Firewire, then FW + USB2, and now only USB2. The power pins for Firewire and USB2 have different current and voltage limits, so you can't just feed it in as if they were the same without some sort of converter. A lot of the early chargers only charged over Firewire, assuming that it was okay to ignore the USB power pins.
So far, it's been lucky that the biggest change that's happened to the cables is the Firewire/USB2 nonsense.
