With the setting on, books will not lose the 'New' flag automatically on opening the book. Instead, once in the book, you get a new menu option to toggle the flag on/off. So you can use it, for example, to track books you've read. When you finish a book, you remove the flag, while all unread books retain their flags for as long as you want.

I guess it might be time to update the PRS+ wiki with info on all the new options, and maybe even provide a manual with the install
