I'm not sure how long you've been buying iPods but you're very wrong! The iPods are NOT the same by any stretch of the imagination. LOL Far from it. I have 3 different generations sitting in front of me right now. Length & width are the same, yes. But the depth, screen size and touch wheel are different with each generation and necessitate the purchase of a different case because of it.
So, I don't know what you're talking about here but you're off kilter with your facts.
And as far as the connector goes, nope, not really the same either. I have a couple of sound docks for my iPods and while the connector looks the same, the internal mechanics of it are not. I also have an iPod Nano, 5th gen & it doesn't charge on any of the sound docks the way the larger Classic iPods do. It's the same connector physically but it has something to do with USB & Firewire internal connection. They don't charge on the sound docks because Apple decided to change it.
I went to the local friendly Apple store to look for an adaptor to make it charge on the docks I already own. The tool told me I had to buy new sound docks.

Buddy, my Bose cost me $400 a couple of years ago & is perfect working order I'm NOT spending that kind of coin because head office decided to change the guts of the connector on the Nano! sheesh
