I think a large part of this system relies on putting books in shelves to indicate what you think it is (Historic fiction, hard sci-fi, sci-fi) etc.
Having lots of books shelved as sci-fi will get more general sci-fi recommendations instead of hard sci-fi. At least that's how I understand their explanation.
I only shelve my books as Own, To-read, Read, Wishlist, so I'm not sure how well it will do.
