The best tool I've found for this is Marcel Weiher's TextLightning.app available from
www.metaobject.com (ob. discl. I was a beta-tester). Although it's a Mac OS X app, it's available for Linux and could probably be compiled for Windows using the recently improved support for Windows GNUstep
www.gnustep.org affords.
