If I bought something in Italy and returned to the US I would be expected to declare it. If the total value of my declared items was over a certain amount, I would have to pay taxes on it.

I am assuming that Italy has similar rules.

Then again they have to be able to prove that you didn't own it when you left the country and that you did buy it while out on your trip.

You have to make the call as to what you are are going to do.

Personally, I have never spent over the allowable amount so I have always declared my stuff. If I went over I would probably declare it. The only time I did not declare stuff was flying back from Europe when I was 17 and 20 and I had booze with me.
