I'd certainly recommend the SD card route for unlocking the NC, especially if you are not familiar with Android/rooting.
Everything is done on the SD card, and the main memory is not affected by the unlocking process, so if something goes wrong, or you just decide you want to go back to the original firmware, you just pop the SD card out and reboot, and are right back to the original setup.
