I do remember when one could NOT return underwear or socks to a shop, and when trying on shoes we were required to wear socks. Certainly a lot cleaner in those days. Or so I thought. The pharmacies still sold a LOT of Athlete's Foot Powder and Anti-Itch cream for 'other' areas.
Then I lived in several countries were it's common for people to take 3-4 showers a day, and now in a country were people will scrub themselves vigorously for 15-20 minutes with washcloths with the texture of steel wool, rinsing and re-soaping and scrubbing again and again BEFORE getting into a bathtub so the water stays clean... There are even UV Light sterilizing shelves for shared slippers now!
Yet they seem to sell as much Athlete's Foot Powder and Anti-Itch cream here as they did in the US.
