That is intended behaviour; it is meant as a reminder. Otherwise people might expect the custom settings to behave as a default, having the restore button as an additional way to set the values.

/edit: I would prefer to have the reminder in the bottom of the custom view settings screen (the way sony does for some settings), but haven't looked this yet.

/edit2: I've been working on trying to find the bug in the booklist you mentioned, but so far I've been unsuccessful. Would you mind running a beta build with some debugging lines inserted? I have attached the file to this message, just rename it to .js and overwrite the existing file.
